Y4IT

Yesterday, we went to UP Diliman for the Y4IT event. It was the last day of the event and the topics were related to game development. Our section, 3CSB, went to UP along with another section, 3CSA. The whole experience was great, I learn more about possible career paths, what to expect in the IT industry, and lots more.

We arrived at the University Theater, were our section and other schools/universities/colleges were waiting for the doors to open. I planned to stay in Bulwagang Tandang Sora for the whole day and separate from my section. But, when I arrived at the location, I ask a security guard where might Bulwagang Tandang Sora be. She answered my inquiry and told me that I must first stay at the university theater, before I return with other people to the location again. I joined my classmates and friends in the theater. After the welcome speech, I ask a volunteer if I can now go back to the location I intended to go. The volunteer told me that I can’t leave anymore because the seminar has started already. I stayed in the theater, even if inside I felt bad about it. the topics for the morning session were alright, but some were boring and I nap on own speaker (they way he talk was slow and made me a bit sleepy). Another speaker was french, so I felt I cannot understand him. I felt that I did not absorb much from the morning session.

After we ate our lunch at the UP canteen, me and andrae went to the Bahay ng Alumni to see the exhibit of different companies. I tried another shot to attend the seminar at the Bulwagang Tandang Sora. Fortunately, I succeeded in attending the seminars in my intended location. One of the speaker was from the UST Chemistry Department. She talked about games in eLearning, and made me realize that studying can also be fun. The speakers of voice production and game design gave us a very valuable information. That most of the games that we are playing were co-created or was fully  created by a Filipino. The artist behind the game, Batman: the Brave and the Bold, are Filipinos and the programmers are also Filipinos. The voice behind the games that we used to play or are currently played are voices of our fellow countrymen. the speacker of the voice production presented to us the different voices or characters that he can imitate of give life to. some of the characters he portrayed are Spongebob, Pikachu, a dzmm anchor, an anime character and many more. the last speaker for the afternoon session told us that the Philippines is going to be the next game hub of the world. It’s possible that some of the known american or japanese games would be made by a Filipino. to end my experience, I join in the last game for the session. The ask five people to play Hep-Hep Hooray, i volunteered myself and the other four were from Bulacan state university. I did not win but I gained a consolation prize, a Y4IT shirt.

I hope i can attend the next Y4it seminar next year…

Voces Inocentes

Voces inocentes is a 2004 Mexican film directed by Luis Mandoki. The plot is set during the Salvadoran Civil War in 1980, and is based on writer Óscar Torres‘s childhood. The film serves as a general commentary on the military use of children. The movie also shows injustice against innocent people who are forced to fight in the war. It follows the story of the narrator, a boy named Chava. (Wikipedia)

The Circulo Hispano Tomasino, the official Spanish club of the University, held its yearly event “Fiesta de Pelìkula” at the UST TARC. The event showcased different spanish films that can be watched by members and non-members of the organization.

I watched a Spanish film called “Voces Inocentes” at around 8 in the morning. The film was great and gave me an insight of how the people lived in times of war. It also shows how the military utilizes the youth to increase their numbers against guerrilla. How the military’s power can violate even the rules of the church. back then, children are forced to join armies even if they do not wish to partake in the war. In times of war, people can change for the better or for the worse. And finally, courage can be seen even in times of chaos and destruction.

I can relate some of the events ,that happed in the movie, to real events that happened here in the Philippines.

  • In the People Power Revolution, the church will always side with the people, especially in times of problems and lost of hope. ( The Priest, protected Chava from the soldiers; The Priest, pleading the soldiers to release the children)
  • How brutal the Japanese soldiers were in WII. They would kill even children. (The soldiers killed Chava’s friends without hesitation)
  • Children were involve in the Military and Guerrilla in WII. ( Boy’s were forced to join the army but Chava and his friends joined the Guerrilla)*
  • Marcos banned radio stations from playing songs and televising the voice of the people. ( The soldiers banned some radio stations because it transmitted Guerrilla songs and news)

I felt sad for Chava, because his friends were killed in front of him (Except for Antonio who at first did not what to join the military but finally willingly joined it), he lost his home due to the military burning their home, his crush died in a fight between the military and the guerrillas. but i found funny moments like the child-like demeanor of Acha ,the antics of the bus driver, Ricardito calling every man his mother meets as “Papa”.

NOTE:

* in the movie the Military and the Guerrillas are fighting each other; In the Philippines during the WII, the military and Guerrilla worked together to fight against the Japanese Soldiers. I just stated the slight similarities.

I watch this in the auditorium, just me, no one else in the auditorium (except the technician, but he leaves the auditorium once in a while). It felt a bit creepy all alone in the auditorium, the lights are off and the previews of some other movies are in the horror genre. I hope the Next time i’m gonna watch, some one is with me, because it’s slightly nerve-wracking to watch a movie with no one else to watch with or have a small chat with.

Hell week is about to start

the prelims week is almost here… hope to survive

flashback…Taekwondo

While I was in trinoma last may 17, the activity area had an event. I was curious, what was the event that was held there. To my surprise, it was a taekwondo competition. The memory of joining poomse competitions and watching my fellow member compete in different competitions. I remember practicing really hard for the poomse and training hard to compete in a national competition. But sadly, I left the martial arts because of health concern. Sometimes, I wish I could return to feel the joy of training for a promotion test, poomse competition and other competition. if ever i have a huge free time, i might comeback someday. but for now I would study hard so i can graduate.

My Ustetika experience

My experience was great, it felt good to try a literary contest for once.

I entered the fiction division of the contest with my literary piece, “Promise, I won’t forget”. I created the piece while I was enjoying my semestral break. I was nervous from the time I took the application form to the time I asked two of my professors to sign the certificate of originality. After this first part of the experience, i was calm and relax.

When I received a text message that I needed to get my invitation, my feeling of being nervous came back. My mind was asking a lot of questions related to the contest. the invitation was simple but made a big impact on me. I was much closer to the truth, did I win or not.

The last part was the awarding ceremony. I calm myself to prevent a false hope of winning. The night was great, the Plaza Mayor in UST was a nice place to be. When I arrived to my table, i met a new friend and like me she was nervous. The time had come to call on the winners for those who entered the english category. The Fiction Division was the first to be called for the awarding. Alas I did not win, but in the end I tried my best. There is always a next time.

For now I’ll try to improve on my writing skills so I can win the next Ustetika literary contest next year.

My first Post…
